  • Homework - Expect approximately 10 hours (+/-) of self study and homework outside of class per week. This number may vary depending on your prior knowledge and study habits. Expect to be doing 1-2 hours of massage on your own time at home per week in order to fully absorb and integrate the techniques you learn in class. If you plan on working while going to school, be sure to budget your time to allow for this home study. This program is rich with information and experience and requires dedication. Do not expect to "breeze through it" just because it is a hands-on modality. Academic rigor is maintained.

  • Attendance - Attendance is a major part of this program. Only 6 days total (48 hours, and lateness will be counted towards this as well) may be missed, and those hours must be made up through private tutoring. Missing more than 6 days, or 48 hours, total puts you at risk for dismissal. Massage therapy is a hands-on skill that needs supervised practice and must be learned in person. Examine your life carefully to be sure you can make this commitment. While we understand that things come up in life (illness, family issues, car trouble, snow, etc.) none of those are excused absences. There are no excused absences. All students must be physically present in order to receive credit for hours that will be listed on their transcript. Additionally, this is a mountain ski town. Please be sure your car is equipped to travel in snowy conditions. Snow days are called at the director's discretion.

Specialty Certifications

By going through our standard 715 hour program, you will specialize in Swedish and Deep Tissue Massage. In 2011 we will be offering two additional optional specialty certifications: Hot Stone and Yoga Teacher. Each module will be approximately 1 week long and there will be an additional cost. You can choose only one of these as they will happening at the same time.

Hot Stone Certification - Carole Smith, who learned massage with hot stones in her hands, will be training you specifics of Hot Stone Full Body Massage. With great attention to detail, you will learn what equipment to use, how to set it up for optimization, temperature maintenance, safety, sequencing and layout of stones, using the stones as an extension of your body, energy work and management. Purchase of specified stone set and equipment is required. You will receive a framable certificate stating your specialization in this modality.

Yoga Teacher Training - While yoga is a big part of our 715 hour program, we do not touch on how to teach it within those 715 hours. This Yoga Teacher Training module will cover ancient yogic texts, yoga philosophy, principles of teaching such as use of voice and presentation, hands-on adjustments, attention to group energy, alignment details of each asana, encouraging awareness, teaching meditation, yoga class as ceremony, and more. This module will be at least 70 hours and may take place at a Hot Springs Retreat in Truth or Consequences, NM. After the completion of this module and the massage program, you will be eligible to register with the Yoga Alliance as an RYT200. This training is suitable for those simply wishing to go deeper in their own yoga practice, those wishing to recommend yoga postures to their massage clients, or those wishing to teach yoga in a class setting.
